Palos Heights officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday afternoon for a redevelopment project at Palmer Park at 123rd Street and 73rd Avenue. Digging in with shovels (from left) are Recreation Advisory Board member Denise Hyker, Ald. Jack Clifford, Ald. Jerry McGovern, Mayor Bob Straz, Ald. Jeff Key, Ald. Don Bylut, and Matt Fairbanks, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. The four aldermen serve on the City Council’s Recreation Committee, which Alderman Key chairs. The improvements are being made possible by a matching $400,000 Open Space Land Acquisition and Development grant from the state. The improvements are expected to be completed by the fall and will feature an inclusive playground and playground surface making it accessible to people in wheelchairs, new basketball courts, a pollinator garden, bocce ball courts, a paved walking track looping around the park, and practice soccer and ball fields.
