In its first playoff game in 10 seasons, Chicago Christian ran for more than 300 yards and rolled to victory in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Jonathan Griffin ran for 154 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries, and added 73 return yards, and Desmond Rodgers finished with 167 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries as the Knights defeated Collins, 41-12. The game was played Oct. 27 at Lane Stadium on Chicago’s northwest side.
“We felt confident with our group of guys up front,” Chicago Christian coach Nick Cook said. “It was one of our better rushing performances of the season. We’ve got some big, weight-room guys on our line.
“We highlighted to our guys that they earned their sixth win the week before, and now they had a chance for the sixth postseason win in school history. That’s pretty cool that we were able to do that.”
Jeff Smith threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Brian Anderson for the Knights, while Ty Sperling led the defense, which held Collins (8-2) under 200 yards.
The Knights will host Eastland-Pearl City (10-0) at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
